Frequently Asked Questions

How do I zoom and pan the spectrogram?

You can navigate the spectrogram viewer using standard touch gestures:

  • Pinch-to-Zoom: Pinch inward or outward with two fingers anywhere on the graph to zoom in or out. Zooming works independently on the time (horizontal) and frequency (vertical) axes.
  • Drag-to-Pan: Drag one finger across the screen to slide (pan) the view window to inspect different areas of the spectrogram.
Why does the spectrogram appear blank or completely dark?

If the graph is loaded but appears completely black or empty, it usually relates to your audio's amplitude floor. Try the following adjustments in your settings:

  • Check Loudness Span: In the settings panel, verify the Minimum and Maximum dB range settings. If the Minimum dB range is set too high (above the signal's noise floor), quieter details will not be rendered.
  • Check Channels: If you are analyzing a multi-channel file and selected a single silent channel, the spectrogram will be empty. Ensure the correct channel (Left, Right, or Mix) is selected.
Which audio formats are supported?

Spek supports importing and decoding a wide variety of container formats and codecs including: WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, M4A, FLAC, and OGG. If a file fails to decode, the app includes corruption preflight scans to check for container errors or damage.

What do the different tuning settings mean?

You can optimize the spectrogram visualization with the following parameters:

  • FFT Size: Determines the sample window size. Higher values (e.g., 4096 or 8192) give better frequency resolution but lower time resolution. Lower values (e.g., 1024) improve time precision.
  • Window Function: Controls spectral leakage. Rectangular, Hann, and Hamming windows offer different trade-offs in frequency detail sharpness.
  • Time Overlap: Controls how dense the time slices are. High overlap values (up to 95%) create smoother, continuous-looking spectrogram transitions.
How can I export the spectrogram image?

Tap the Export icon on the analysis screen. The app will generate a clean, high-resolution PNG image containing your current viewport. It will open the system sharing sheet, allowing you to save the file or send it to other applications.
